Hannes De Deurwaerder
Dr. De Deurwaerder is an Assistant Professor of Global Change Ecology in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation (FREC) in the College of Natural Resources and Environment (CNRE) at Virginia Tech. His research integrates plant physiology and ecology to understand how vegetation ecosystems respond to climate change and human encroachment. By linking physiological performance at the individual plant level with population-level demographic responses, he investigates how different plant strategies shape competition, invasiveness, and patterns of species coexistence or exclusion.
His work focuses on the ecological dynamics of climbing plants, particularly the roles and impacts of native and invasive temperate lianas in forest ecosystems. Ultimately, his research aims to identify the mechanisms driving liana invasion and spread to support native species and mitigate the expansion of invasive lianas.
