IGC fellow James Moloney has been named one of 20 recipients of the Ecological Society of America’s 2026 Katherine S. McCarter Graduate Student Policy Award, a national recognition honoring graduate students who demonstrate leadership in science policy and public service. The award reflects a growing emphasis on preparing scientists who can bridge research and policy — an effort closely aligned with the Global Change Center’s mission to connect science with real‑world decision-making.

As part of the program, Moloney joined the award cohort in Washington, D.C., for intensive training focused on policy communication, the federal budget process, and career pathways in science policy. Participants then met with congressional offices on Capitol Hill to discuss federal support for scientific research.

During his time in Washington, Moloney’s group visited seven congressional offices. He led conversations with staff from the offices of Sen. Tim Kaine, Sen. Mark Warner, and Rep. Morgan Griffith, contributing to discussions about the importance of sustained federal investment in science.

His participation underscores the Global Change Center’s commitment to experiential learning that equips emerging scholars to communicate effectively with policymakers and advocate for research that benefits communities in Virginia and beyond. The Ecological Society of America noted that this year’s awardees were selected for their leadership, engagement, and dedication to public service — qualities Moloney represents on behalf of Virginia Tech.
