In 2023 Dr. Hyman started a position as a Foreign Species Biologist with the USFWS.

Dr. Amanda A. Hyman joined Virginia Tech as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Biological Sciences in the Mims Lab in Spring 2022. She completed her PhD in 2022 at the University of Tennessee – Knoxville in conservation planning and biology in the Department of Ecology and Evolution. Amanda’s PhD focused on conservation planning through time and improving coproduced science efforts in the Southeastern USA.

Amanda’s work lies at the intersection of human dimensions and conservation planning. She’s worked on conservation problems ranging from reducing human-lion conflict in Tanzania to optimal harvest strategies of African Mahogany in Benin to best management practices of stocked trout here in Virginia. Across all these efforts, Amanda has explored how to increase the efficiency and efficacy of natural resource conservation efforts through a combination of surveying resource users and mathematical models.

Amanda currently works on a species vulnerability assessment funded by the National Climate Adaptation Science Center. The project seeks to develop a multidimensional indicator of climate change vulnerability across a broad range of taxonomic groups. The indicator could help inform management and prioritization of species of concern across the USA.
