In 2025, Dr. Olsson took a position as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Radboud University in the Netherlands.
Freya was a postdoctoral researcher working with Dr Quinn Thomas and Dr Cayelan Carey in the Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech. She is interested in integrating process-based modelling and field measurements to better understand the interaction of physical processes and ecosystem functioning and improve the management of freshwater ecosystems.
Freya joined Virginia Tech in Summer 2022 after completing her PhD at the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology and Lancaster University, where she investigated the impact of water residence time changes on lake ecosystem functioning. Freya’s work at VT combines fundamental and applied research across the fields of freshwater ecology and environmental modelling, combining open-source software, sensor observations, and hydrodynamic models to develop forecasts of water quality in lakes and reservoirs across the continental US.
