Maike Holthuijzen joined Virginia Tech in 2022 and works with Cayelan Carey and Quinn Thomas. Maike was born and raised in Boise, Idaho and earned a bachelor’s degree in Ecology and Conservation Biology at the University of Idaho in Moscow, ID, where she developed a keen interest in plant ecology. She continued to pursue her interest by earning an MS in Ecology at Utah State University. While taking various statistics classes at Utah state, she became more intrigued by the quantitative side of ecology and earned a second MS in Statistics at Utah State. She completed her PhD in Data Science at the University of Vermont. Her dissertation focused on developing novel computational methods and statistical models for downscaling and bias-correcting temperature and precipitation output from climate models.

Maike’s research interests include spatiotemporal modeling, Gaussian process modeling, and predictive modeling using machine learning with applications to ecology and the environment. Currently, she is working on modifying an existing physics-based deep learning model such that it can generate future forecasts with uncertainty quantification. In the future, Maike hopes to continue working as a researcher at the intersection of statistics and ecology.

Maike is also an avid triathlete and gravel cyclist and loves her training routine. Since venturing back into triathlon after breaking her leg six years ago, she has placed within the top five female competitors in the triathlons in which she participated.
