Dr. Valentina Gómez-Bahamón is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech. The Gómez-Bahamón lab focuses on the role of behavioral flexibility on speciation and the evolution of traits across taxonomic and geographic scales. We are interested in understanding how the current state of the of the world is affecting species and why some are declining while others are thriving. The overarching goal with this research is to understand how evolutionary processes interact with the ecological context predisposing species to go extinct or thrive under current and future environmental challenges.
She is originally from Colombia, where she is a volunteer member of SELVA: Research for Conservation in the Neotropics. She accomplished her PhD at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and the Field Museum of Natural History, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Penn State University and a visiting postdoctoral position at the University of Michigan.
