Dr. Hua Yan is a Postdoctoral Associate in the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences at Virginia Tech, working in Dr. Yongfa You’s Agroecosystem Modeling Lab.

Hua's expertise lies in eco-hydrology modeling, biogeochemical cycling, and machine learning with a particular focus on carbon–water–nitrogen interactions in agricultural and managed ecosystems. His long-term research goal is to develop data-driven and process-informed frameworks that integrate observations, models, and advanced analytics to support sustainable land and water management under global environmental change.

In particular, his current work focuses on characterizing ecosystem water-use efficiency responses to climate extremes at regional to global scales, and disentangling the roles of climate drivers, vegetation structure, and land-use intensity in shaping coupled carbon–water-nitrogen processes.

Before joining Virginia Tech, Hua completed his Ph.D. in Earth System Science at Auburn University, where his doctoral research examined ecohydrological and biogeochemical responses of agricultural and mixed-use watersheds to climate variability and land-use change, with an emphasis on streamflow dynamics, nutrient cycling, and human–environment interactions.
