On the afternoon of Friday, November 15, the Global Change Center (GCC) at Virginia Tech hosted its annual faculty retreat at the Skelton Conference Center. This year’s retreat brought together faculty affiliates for an afternoon of meaningful dialogue, strategic planning, and networking—highlighting the collective momentum of the GCC as we approach our 10th year as a center.

Celebrating Progress and Embracing Opportunities

The retreat began with the State of the GCC presentation, which offered an impressive overview of the center’s accomplishments over the past nine years. Faculty affiliates reflected on our collective progress, including impactful research, innovative training programs, and growing interdisciplinary collaborations.

Highlights included:

  • A review of the center’s growth and impact, demonstrating our network’s collective influence.
  • A look at upcoming opportunities and challenges, setting the stage for continued growth.
  • Updates on the GCC’s integration into the Northeast Climate Adaptation Science Center (NE CASC). This prestigious affiliation will open the door to new resources next fall, including increased graduate student support and access to competitive grant funding.

Advancing Research Goals Through Collaboration

The second part of the retreat featured a facilitated group discussion, expertly guided by Erin Ling, Senior Extension Specialist and Coordinator of the Virginia Household Water Quality Program in Biological Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech.

Faculty engaged in a dynamic conversation focused on strategically leveraging incoming NE CASC resources to advance our shared research goals. The collaborative atmosphere fostered innovative ideas and actionable steps to maximize the impact of this opportunity.
