Building Financial Literacy: IGC GSO Hosts Successful Workshop
December 5, 2024
On November 15, the Interfaces of Global Change (IGC) Graduate Student Organization (GSO) hosted a financial literacy workshop for IGC fellows, blending insightful presentations with engaging activities. Held in Steger Hall, the event drew 15 participants, both in person and via Zoom. The afternoon was filled with collaborative discussion, practical advice, and some friendly competition.
Expert Guidance and Interactive Learning
Hokie Wellness experts Alayna Woodall and Mara Ball delivered an engaging presentation on essential financial topics, including Roth and traditional IRAs, 401(k)s, and other investment opportunities. They also introduced fellows to useful tools for calculating income taxes and cost of living—practical resources for those preparing for post-graduation decisions. The workshop’s interactive nature kept attendees fully engaged, encouraging thoughtful questions and meaningful discussions.
A Fun Finish
The event concluded on a high note with a spirited round of Kahoot, testing participants’ newfound financial knowledge. Zoom attendee Lainey Metz emerged victorious, claiming the title of Kahoot champion and earning some well-deserved bragging rights.
Looking Ahead
This successful event provided valuable insights into the financial topics most relevant to IGC fellows. "We now have a much clearer idea of what fellows are most curious about and are excited about the possibility of bringing Hokie Financial Wellness back for a more tailored workshop based on graduate student input!" said Professional Development Committee Co-Chair Mariana Castaneda-Guzman.
The GSO is now exploring opportunities to collaborate with Hokie Financial Wellness on future workshops tailored to graduate students’ needs and interests. The IGC GSO continues to foster the professional growth of its community through events like these, offering resources, support, and opportunities for connection.
-
This workshop was born out of the IGC GSO’s dedication to supporting fellows’ professional development. Earlier this semester, an interest survey highlighted a strong demand for financial literacy training.
Castaneda-Guzman led the planning efforts, with Co-Chair Megan Harris ensuring seamless Zoom coordination. Secretary/Treasurer Priscila dos Reis Cunha arranged funding for the delicious food spread from Mezzeh, made possible by the generous support of the Graduate Student Budget Board (GSBB).
